Before
The bathroom was cramped and not practical for the two senior occupants who were gradually facing mobility changes.
After
Very often adding the words “handicap accessible” to the description of a room can have the effect of creating the expectation that the room will be devoid of style; picture a hospital room. That’s not the case at all in this amazing bathroom. Created as part of a new “granny flat” in San Diego, it needed to be designed to accommodate the two senior occupants both now, and going forward as their mobility changes. As neither occupant was interested in a tub, a shower of generous proportions with a low step was called for. A hand held showerhead has a mounting bracket on the wall so it can be used either way. And as for style, the real show-stopper in this room is the look of solid slabs of stone on the shower walls, created by hand-selecting stone tiles and matching the streaks of color in each tile. Another surprise is the dual sink vanity. In a house that does not exceed 700 square feet in total, finding room in the design for a full-size house detail like a dual vanity is almost a magic trick. The dark slab of stone on the vanity top repeats the tone of the natural stripes on the shower walls. With the large vanity and two wall-hung medicine cabinets storage for everything the senior couple needs is right at hand
